Inspired by both Japanese doll theater and shadow play, we created Doll Factory, an animated film that tells the story of a unique doll who steps outside the box. Due to an unexpected mistake, the heroine gains the ability to learn and experience emotions such as curiosity and fear. We also used color to emphasize her uniqueness. In a black-and-white world, her individuality might seem like madness, which we highlighted through her movements and multiplicity.
The project takes the form of video mapping, and during the planning phase, the modernist starkness and simplicity of the building reminded us of a factory. The large format enhances the feeling of unease, while the oversized figures carry an almost unreal aura. With this in mind, we set the story in the eponymous factory.
Our work addresses the theme of non-conformity and how it is often perceived in the real world.
